The Richard Attenborough theatre within our purpose-built Sound
Centre offers a truly world-class mixing experience in which to realise the soundtrack for your film.
It is one of the elite studios in the UK which has been Dolby Premier Certified,
guaranteeing the highest possible quality of sound, picture and expertise, within a modern, spacious and comfortable environment.
When choosing a Post Production mixing venue, many considerations are taken into account.
Price is of course important, as well as choice of Mixer and the location of mix venue.
While juggling many differing options,
it is easy to overlook the technical specifications of a room, only to
be disappointed during the mix when one or more aspects of the dub does not come up to expectation.
Twickenham Studios has recently been working with Dolby Laboratories UK to achieve Dolby Premier status
in the Richard Attenborough Theatre. If a room has this certification, the film maker can be assured that
it has passed the most stringent quality tests for both the sound and vision chains.
During spring 2010, Twickenham engineers Carl Childs and Darren Vega, with the help of Dolby's James Seddon,
instigated plans to convert the Richard Attenborough Theatre into a Dolby Premier room.
The undertaking was no mean feat, with the theatre out of action for 6 weeks. The original curved screen
was removed to make way for the construction of an acoustic wall, housing new JBL monitors.
A larger flat screen was then installed measuring 27 x 11.5ft (8.25x3.5m).
Elsewhere in the room, the existing analogue monitoring was replaced with a digital speaker management system,
allowing the Mixer to easily switch to any number of surround configurations, including the latest 7.1 format.
The theatre's
Harrison mixing console also received a modification with the integration of a Digidesign D-Command ES.
However, it wasn’t only the sound chain that was under scrutiny. The alignment of the HD video projector was tested,
and the 35mm projector was fitted with new lenses to make the most of the greater screen size.
Even the mains electricity supplies, and air conditioning systems,
were inspected to ensure that there would be no interference onto the audio paths.
Finally, cosmetic improvements were carefully implemented to modernise the look and feel
of the room, while maintaining its excellent sound characteristics.
On completion of the tests Chief Engineer Carl Childs, along with Darren Vega received the
certificate of accreditation from James Seddon. James commented that
"the most satisfying part of a Dolby Premier installation
is knowing that each part of the chain is as good as it can possibly be."
