The Head of Picture Post Production is a key role within the studio management team, responsible for the oversight and successful management of Post Production projects from acquisition to delivery. The aim of this role is to ensure that all departments within Picture Post work together efficiently to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.

They are directly responsible for collaborating with the Director on, but not limited to, production & postproduction technology, the technical facilities, technology pipelines, workflow, colour science, calibration schedules, data movement, content security and adherence to industry standard technical specifications and delivery requirements of major studios and networks.

The ideal candidate will be highly experienced, passionate and self-motivated. This role requires experience working closely with production, leading diverse operational and technical teams.

The candidate should have an already established successful track record of working at similar levels within a large post-production company delivering content of a comparable standard and profile for both film and television.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee workflow creation and communication between all departments in picture post production. Guarantee that all client requirements are fulfilled and provide input on areas that can be streamlined to better fit the needs of projects.

  • Ensure that working practices are consistent and sustainable across picture post production.

  • Oversee day-to-day technical operations and identify any potential barriers to providing client solutions ahead of time to allow for maneuverability of studio resources.

  • Guarantee that all teams are provided with the necessary resources to complete work to an excellent standard, whilst tailoring the approach to each project with the client needs and budget in mind.

  • Communicate with other heads of department to ensure pace is maintained with developing technologies and workflows within the industry. This includes ensuring the all staff members are adequately skilled and develop with the ever-changing needs of picture post production.

  • Work with the sales and bookings teams to ensure that the needs of the client are considered at every stage, from appropriate budget-conscious workflow solutions to adequate staffing and resource availability. Consult with these teams as to how to efficiently utilize available resources.

  • Collaborate with Director of Technology and Engineering to ensure that systems are intelligently designed with our workflows in mind. Make sure that tools are developed to provide solutions to all workflow requirements and develop these tools in line with client requirements as they evolve.

  • Support the maintenance and calibration programs across the facilities.

  • Investigate and evaluate new equipment, software, tools and techniques as part of the R&D team.

  • Build and maintain co-operative working relationships with other team leaders to ensure a cohesive and supportive approach.

  • Manage and nurture internal resources, including the hiring and retention of personnel and freelancers.

  • Provide support for all staff members working within picture post production including (but not limited to) holiday approval, performance review, training and development to assist in the development of a respected and motivated workforce.


Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 4 years’ experience at a similar technical level within a large facility delivering high end content for film and television.

  • Applicant must have an intrinsic knowledge of picture post production including film/television professional standards, camera specifications and workflows, dailies, offline/online editorial, VFX, DI and mastering.

  • Excellent client-facing skills and the ability to work with clients to determine their specific project requirements and adjust/troubleshoot where applicable.

  • Experience in building/managing teams, setting targets, tracking the skills/development and reviewing staff performance.

  • Good understanding of motion picture and audio capture, processing, and displays from the traditional emulsion-based process to the latest professional digital cameras and high dynamic range displays.

  • Understanding of industry standard content security and architecture ensuring our client’s content is secure.

  • Understanding of the MPAA/TPN guidelines and policies ensuring facility compliance.

  • Previous experience of studio and network technology and workflow audits and implementation.

  • Experience with virtualised machine environments, render pipelines, production storage systems and excellent working knowledge of Aspera and other secure file transfer networks and platforms.

  • Excellent client relation skills and professional profile within the industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise both personal and team workloads to ensure that tasks are delegated appropriately, and targets met within a fast-paced environment.

  • Able to constructively appraise senior management of project statuses with capability to provide insight and guidance on future endeavours.

  • Willingness to develop own knowledge and skills by attending further training and industry events in order to be able to provide effective training solutions internally and build future workflows with industry developments in mind.

  • Ability to remain calm and effective in difficult situations.

  • A logical and fast approach to problem solving, with a tolerance for ambiguity in a rapidly evolving environment.
