Primary Purpose:

The Director of Engineering & Technology is primarily responsible for the overall technical operational activity and future development. The candidate should constantly look to improve processes and work to advance quality, productivity and efficiency of the studio and post-production services.

They are directly responsible for, but not limited to, production & post-production technology, the technical facilities, technology pipelines, workflow, colour science, high-end theatrical audio specifications, calibration schedules, data movement, content security and adherence to industry standard technical specifications and delivery requirements of major studios and networks.

They will spearhead a technical innovation hub to create a centre for excellence and enhancement, supervising specialist engineers with varied and overlapping backgrounds.  The Director will lead and build a skilled and motivated team of technical elite to provide exceptional bespoke services for our clients.

The ideal candidate will be highly experienced, passionate and self-motivated. This role requires experience working closely with production, leading diverse operational and technical teams, developing budgets, project timelines and engineering solutions that achieve production and operational efficiencies.

The candidate should have an already established successful track record of working at similar levels within large studio and/or post-production companies delivering content of a comparable standard and profile for both film and television.


Key Responsibilities:

  • the development and the efficient implementation of the business’ technology strategies.

  • Drive technical innovation through the implementation of new technology, identification of internal synergies and overall leadership of their team.

  • Drive development of projects relating to metadata indexing and asset management systems for content in post-production and contribute to the long-term technology and workflow strategy.

  • Engage with solutions manufacturers to advise on feature requirements and new product design, through all phases of research, construction and commissioning.

  • Investigate and evaluate new equipment, software, tools and techniques.

  • Triage all workflow and technical software developments and monitor, test and implement them into our workflow, ensuring constant technical development, and lead R&D, planning, implementation and maintenance plan for all equipment.

  • Responsible for ensuring the studio adheres to industry technical specifications and standards and our facility is fit for purpose.

  • Day to day management of engineering, data I/O and all technical support department’s, as well as the technical infrastructure across all studio services.

  • Lead the technical facility & engineering teams and interact with key members of each production to establish an efficient workflow and digital pipeline through their entire production & post-production processes.

  • Build and maintain co-operative working relationships with other management team leaders to ensure a cohesive and supportive approach.

  • Manage and nurture internal resources, including the hiring and retention of personnel and freelancers.

  • Design and support the maintenance and calibration programs across the facilities.


Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 5+ years’ experience at a similar technical level within a large facility delivering high end content for film and television

  • Capacity to lead and grow a team of expert and technical specialists.

  • In-depth understanding of motion picture and audio capture, processing, and displays from the traditional emulsion-based process to the latest professional digital cameras and high dynamic range displays.

  • Proficiency with production sound recording equipment and workflows on set, as well as mastery of Pro Tools and Dolby Atmos.

  • Excellent understanding of design and implementation of industry standard content security and architecture ensuring our client’s content is secure.

  • Excellent understanding of the MPAA/TPN guidelines and policies ensuring facility compliance.

  • Previous experience of studio and network technology and workflow audits and implementation of evolving security recommendations and improvements required for compliance.

  • Excellent understanding of industry standardization bodies and their policies and technical specifications to ensure we are producing fully compliant deliverables.

  • Experience with video & audio wiring/routing and fault diagnosis to component level

  • Experience with virtualised machine environments, render pipelines, SAN and NAS style production storage systems and excellent working knowledge of Aspera and other secure file transfer networks and platforms.

  • Strong level of knowledge in scripting, Python & BASH

  • Excellent client relation skills and professional profile within the industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise both personal and team workloads to ensure that tasks are delegated appropriately, and targets met within a fast-paced environment.

  • Able to constructively appraise other senior management and shareholders of project statuses with capability to provide insight and guidance on future endeavours.

  • Ability to remain calm and effective in difficult situations.

  • A logical and fast approach to problem solving, with a tolerance for ambiguity in a rapidly evolving environment.

  • Resilient, tenacious, flexible, diplomatic, committed with strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to get involved with precise attention to detail.
